    The vocabulary to learn to travel in Brazil!

    Brazilian Portuguese is a « singing » language, as will tell you lots of travelers. The  variety of accents, and especially the intonations in the country, will quickly give you the willing to listen to a bossa-nova song with a caipirinha… Before your trip, we advise you to familiarize with the accent in aim at understanding the differences with the Portuguese from Portugal. Here are some words to know and useful sentences to facilitate your trip in Brazil.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Basic expressions and common words

     

    Good morning / Good afternoon / Good evening : Bom dia / Boa tarde / Boa noite
    How are you? : Como você está/vai?
    Very well, thank you, and you? : Muito bem, obrigado, e você?
    Do you speak French/English? : Você fala francês/inglês?
    I understand/I do not understand : Eu entendo/Eu não compreendo
    Sorry : Desculpe
    Good bye : Tchau / Até logo
    Welcome : Bem-vindo
    Thank you (very much) : (Muito) Obrigado/a
    Excuse me / Please : Com licença / Por favor

    How much is this ? : Quanto custa? / Qual é o valor?
    It is very cheap : E muito barato
    It is very expensive ! : E muito caro!
    Can you make a promotion ? : Você pode fazer um melhor preço?
    I would like to buy… this, that one ! : Gostaria de comprar… isso, este!
    I love / I ate : Eu gosto / Eu odeio

    Is it close/far ? : Fica perto/longe?

    Hours / Dates and days

     

     

    What time is it ? : Que horas são?
    Monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday : segunda-feira, terça-feira, quarta-feira, quinta-feira, sexta-feira, sábado, domingo.
    I am here in holiday/travelling : Eu estou aqui de férias/de viagem

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    At the restaurant

     

     

    I am hungry / I am thirsty : Eu tenho fome / Eu tenho sede
    Bon appétit / Enjoy your meal/food : Bom apetite
    Cheers ! : Saúde!
    It was delicious ! : Estava delicioso!
    What do you recommend me ? : O que você me aconselha?
    I am vegetarian : Eu sou vegetariano/a
    Without spices ! (I do not like spices) : Sem pimenta! (Eu não gosto de pimenta)
    It is very hot ! : E muito quente!
    I am allergic : Eu sou alérgico/a
    Nut : Amendoim
    I would like… : Eu queria…

    Health / Emergency / Security

     

    I need to see a doctor : Eu preciso ir a um médico.
    Where is the hospital ? : Aonde fica o hospital?
    Call a doctor/an ambulance : Chame um médico/uma ambulância
    I do not feel very good : Eu não me sinto bem
    Where are the toilets ? : Onde está o banheiro? O banheiro por favor
    I am lost : Eu não sei bem onde estou / Eu estou perdido/a

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    With these few words and sentences, you will be able to communicate a minimum in Brazil.

    You will see, Brazilians are very welcoming and will not miss an opportunity to help you.

    But, if you have time, the ideal is to take Portuguese classes.
