Just like in France, English has influenced the business world’s vocabulary in Brazil particularly in the marketing and new technology departments. My Little Brasil makes a list of what to say and what to definitely not say.
Resist English homogeny in the Brazilian business world
Whether it’s by mimicry or laziness, many Anglicisms are emerging every day in Portuguese. They may be shorter, more practical or refer to a new concept but often sound terrible. That’s the case of targetear (cibler) or customização (customizing).
Brazilian business world expressions derived from English
Aplicar : se candidatar/se inscrever (apply)
Background : formação/experiência (educational/professional background or experience)
Fazer um benchmark : comparer (to compare against a benchmark)
Branding : desenvolvimento de marca/criação de marca (branding)
Target/targetear : segment de mercado/segmentar (target/ segment)
Surely it’s not as easy as that! So? Are you motivated yet? Do you want to take Portuguese classes online via Skype? For those who are more motivated, why not come to São Paulo for a few weeks for an intensive Portuguese immersion program.
